Growing competition, high stakes attracting big money to Arizona's races

The last time Arizona had an open Senate seat, outside groups poured $23 million into the 2012 race to shape voters’ views of their ballot choices.

But that pricey race got off to a slow start, with those groups spending just $19,000 in the first week after the primary to help Jeff Flake, the eventual winner.

By the same point this year, outside groups had pumped more than $2 million into helping Democratic U.S. Rep. Kyrsten Sinema in her efforts to win the open Senate seat.

It was an early cash infusion that suggests more spending — probably a lot more — lies ahead.
